Big Data is the future of how business decisions are made and IBM Watson Data Platform is a sandbox of products that help wrangle that data into insights. Our platform is a set of data persistence services, data pipelines and engines, analytics and data enrichment tools, and integration and governance capabilities for the Data Science community. I designed the Admin monitoring tool for the entire platform.

Who were our users?

Our users were Account Owners in charge of billing and monitoring overall usage of all services within the IBM Watson Data Platform platform.

What problems was I solving and how did I solve them?

They needed the ability to observe productive use within their organization and manage specific services based on their credentials. I provided a place for the Account Owner to monitor the overall health of the platform efficiently.

Discovery. I participated in several user-centered Design Thinking activities to decipher what is needed to help our users and determine the underlying purpose of the Admin Console. Interviewing Stakeholders and sponsor users helped to solidify the overall assumptions.

Exploration. From creating user flows to designing hand-drawn initial ideas and creating mid-fidelity designs – I’ve done it all. During this phase, I reviewed the designs with users, Offering Management, Developers, and Content Writers for feedback and necessary requirement changes were made.

Implementation. After initial concepts were validated, I moved to final designs, and usability test was done with several participants. After evaluating the results, I continued to refine the designs based on user feedback and unexpected changes in business requirements before launching GA in December 2017.
